Christmas and winter break in Stockholm 2026/2027

Facts checked 28 October 2026

The dates

This is the school year for the City of Stockholm's municipal compulsory schools:

Date
Last day of autumn termFriday 18 December 2026
First day of spring termMonday 11 January 2027
Sportlov, winter break (week 9)1–5 March 2027
Easter break (week 13)30 March–2 April 2027

So the Christmas holidays run between 18 December and 11 January.

Independent schools and other municipalities in the county can have other dates, and individual schools may add their own study days. Always check your municipality's or your child's school calendar.

What shall we do?

  • Out in the snow. Sledding hills in Stockholm and ice rinks, including artificial ones that work without frost.
  • Inside when the weather is bad. Indoors with kids: museums free for children, libraries and pools.
  • Playgrounds work in winter too. Find playgrounds near you, ideally one with a toilet nearby.
  • Holiday activities. Many municipalities run activities for kids during the breaks, for example at youth centres, libraries and sports halls. Check your municipality's website a few weeks ahead.

Our advice

Dress kids for the weather, not the calendar. A winter break can bring minus ten or slush above freezing. Read how to dress kids for the temperature.
